Painting

Outside

Originally I thought of leaving most of the aluminum unpainted, unfortunately bare aluminum absorbs a lot of heat and can become so hot to burn the skin.  Painting with a white paint makes a huge difference.

As a general rule all the aluminum parts have to be painted first with various coats of epoxy based International Interprotect.
Interprotect can be bought in white or gray.  One can use a different color of Interprotect for each coat to be sure to cover everything.  To prepare the alloy before painting the first coat the best is to sand it with very coarse paper (# 40 - 60).  For the first coat dilute Interprotect with 15 % thinner.  Apply up to 5-6 coats of Interprotect.  Sand in between with #120 sand paper if the time between coats is more than 24 hours.

To even out use epoxy based International Interfill 830 putty.  One can apply up to 20 mm max of putty.  Use the putty between the Interprotect coats.

After the Interprotect use a minimum of two coats of polyurethane based International Perfection base, followed by a minimum of two coats of polyurethane based International Perfection.

The final coats of International Perfection used on the PH8 have the following colors:

International Perfection Snow White 003    approximate RAL number 9003
International Perfection Platinum Gray A 183
International Perfection Mauritius Blue F991

When painting by hand (as opposed to spray painting) the last coat should be applied with a foam roller.

Below Waterline

After the last coat of Interprotect apply immediately (maximum 5 hours in between) the hard matrix International Xilux 33 dark blue YBA065 or Boero black antifouling.

To completely paint the hulls below the waterline about 15 l of paint are necessary.  If two coats are needed, one after the other, the second coat necessitates only 10 l.

International does not recommend to paint the propellers.

Inside Floors

The inside, plywood floors are evened out with epoxy glue and then are painted with one or two coats of epoxy glue.
On top of the glue two coats of Stoppani polyurethane monocomponent clear varnish.

Inside Walls

The inside walls made of 12 mm plywood are evened out with epoxy glue and then are painted with one coat of epoxy glue.
On top of the glue two coats of Stoppani polyurethane monocomponent clear varnish.

The inside walls made of 33 mm plywood sandwich are evened out with epoxy glue and then are painted with two coats of Stoppani polyurethane monocomponent clear varnish.

Paneling Plywood

The 4 mm Okume' plywood used for paneling is painted with two coats of Stoppani polyurethane monocomponent clear varnish.

Water Tanks

The inside of the water tanks has to be painted otherwise the water will get an "aluminum" taste.  Two or more coats of Stoppani epoxi plus bicomponente grigio 74158.

Hull Insides

After cleaning the aluminum one or two coats of International Interprotect then one or two coats of Stoppani polyurethane monocomponent white.

Engine

Cummins says that the engine color is RAL 9002, but I think that the actual color has more of an ivory touch.  To paint the rusted parts clean away most of the rust, then paint with Arexon Ferox, which binds to the rust and becomes black.  Then the touched up part can be painted with the engine paint.

Aluminum Preparation

If a part is very oxydised and cannot be sanded use Phosphoric acid, then wash down with clean water,

Exclamation. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves when handling the acid.  Also wear a face mask for the fumes.

Paint Preparation

Unfortunately International paints tells only how to mix the two paint components by volume.  To measure relatively small quantities of paint by volume is a real pain, not very precise and messy.  It is much easier to mix the two components by weight, using a small electronic kitchen scale, protected by a transparent plastic bag.

To mix the right amounts by weight one must know the specific weight of the components, value that unfortunately is not supplied by International paints. Either they are still in the electronic stone age or are happy that a lot of paint gets wasted when mixing by volume.
